Self-Certification Extension

Employment Law
An amendment to the Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Regulations has been made so that employees are allowed to self-certificate for up to 28 days (rather than the usual 7 days) starting from 17 December 2021 through to 26 January 2022. During this 28-day window, employees will not be required to obtain a GP fit note.
Any employee who started their sick leave before 10 December 2021 must give proof that they have been ill for more than 7 days.
This is being introduced in order to enable GP’s to focus on the coronavirus vaccine booster program.
Please note that this is only a temporary measure and it is not yet known if there will be any further extension to the Regulations. However, it is likely that the self-certification period will revert back to 7 days for sickness absence on or after 27 January 2022.
