Tweeting from Supreme Court

One of Britain’s most senior Judges has recently given the green-light to live “tweeting” from inside the Supreme Court.

The President of the Supreme Court and one time Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales Lord Phillips, has permitted the use of live tweeting and other similar live communications by court users and members of the press as well as launching a public consultation on the matter.

Lord Philips commented:“We are fortunate that, by the time a case reaches the Supreme Court there is very seldom any reason for any degree of confidentiality, so that questions about what should and should not be shared with those outside the courtroom do not usually arise. This means that we can offer a green light to tweeting and other forms of communication, as long as this does not disrupt the smooth running of the court.”

Litigation Solicitor Stephen McArdle comments: “The news that lawyers and the press can tweet from inside the UK’s most senior court is an interesting development. It shows that the senior Judiciary is not afraid of embracing modern communication techniques. Bringing live updates from inside the Supreme Court is also likely to raise the Court’s profile and raise interest amongst the public to case developments and important decisions.”
