Social Media Policy
13/03/2012

Five reasons why every business should have a social media policy.
Protect Your Corporate Image – you spend years developing your brand and good reputation so the last thing you need is a disgruntled employee complaining about the boss or even a customer (and in turn bringing your business into disrepute).
Protect Your Confidential information – employees may reveal confidential information about your business online. Once confidential information is made public, often the damage has already been done. Having a policy in place will ensure that all employees are aware of the need to protect confidential information.
Maximise Productivity – stipulate what can (and cannot) be accessed, when and how often.
Enable Strong Management - an effective social media policy lays down the rules, and possible sanctions, if employees overstep the mark. Without a clear policy, dismissing an employee for a comment in a social media platform will likely involve greater risks than it otherwise would.
Ensure Compliance – whether it’s avoiding harassment claims, complying with the Data Protection obligations, or ensuring recruitment processes do not expose the business to discrimination risks, a good Social Media Policy lays out the employer’s approach and seeks to minimise the risk of successful claims.
