Rapid Increase in Tribunal Claims

The Tribunals Service and ACAS have published their annual 2008-2009 Reports.

ACAS has noted that there has been a “rapid and sustained increase” in the number of cases received in the second half of 2008-2009 which it attributes to the economic downturn. There appears to have been an increase of 29% in claims for unfair dismissal from 33,352 in 2007-2008 to 43,028 this year.

Furthermore ACAS has noted a 36% rise in the number of claims for redundancy pay claims.

John Hassells says "These figures are not surprising but remind us that dismissing an employee - for redundancy or any other reason - can be a risky business - employees are clearly struggling to find new employment and therefore more willing than ever before to issue a claim for unfair dismissal. In these tough times the stakes are greater for all concerned!"
