Lynda Relocates
30/05/2008

WHEN Lynda McMahon first began working for a Bolton solicitor 35 years ago people bought houses just to live in themselves and the buy-to-let market was almost unknown.
Thousands of conveyancing transactions later, Lynda, now 60, has decided to relocate from the town centre solicitors she first joined in 1973, and the 2008 house rental market is worth millions.
The firm, KBL in Mawdsley Street in the town centre, has also changed much since the days when it was just Lewis and Co with a staff of four including solicitor Stephen Lewis. A later amalgamation with Kippax Beaumont resulted in Kippax, Beaumont, Lewis and today KBL has a staff of more than 50 and is one of the borough’s largest firms of solicitors.
Lynda’s work in conveyancing and probate may have altered as much as the “tools of the trade” – “Yes, it’s gone from typewriters to word processors, to computers and email and everything else that goes with the hi-tech office”, she explained. “The role as a conveyancer has changed drastically as well, there are more searches required, legislation to adhere to and of course, the well publicised Home Information Packs (HIPs) to be produced. You hear so many horror stories these days about people being mislead in the property market, I’m just pleased I’ve be able to assist so many buyers and sellers in getting the right deal” said Lynda.
But she has had a happy time with the company – even taking in her stride the time when she was in charge of the branch office in Harwood and an armed robber came in demanding money. “The lady I was working with from the Abbey National thought it was someone messing about and insisted on him giving her a pass book first,” said Lynda.
“In the end he left with nothing. But we didn’t even shut the office – we just carried on as before.”
Lynda, who lives in Bromley Cross, plans to move nearer her family in Lincolnshire and then spend some time in Greece with friends.
“It’s certainly been an interesting working life,” she added. “And, for me, the best moments have been when I could hand over the keys to someone for their new home, and being able to help people suffering from a bereavement.”
