The Supreme Court is now streaming live court proceedings on the internet.
Many court hearings are already public hearings, at which members of the public can attend and observe. Streaming live proceedings enables greater access for those interested in a particular case or the legal system in general.
Paul Hatton, Commercial Dispute Resolution Solicitor comments: “The use of information technology in the court system continues to gather pace and this is a further progression. Solicitors, barristers and the judiciary are already making the most of technology by adopting paperless systems and encouraging the increased use of email. The streaming of live proceedings is an interesting development. I anticipate the audience will be made up of those with a direct interest in the case, law students or those who are simply inquisitive.”
The live feeds are only for Supreme Court hearings. Proceedings in the lower courts cannot be filmed or photographed.
