Employment Tribunal statistics fall

Bolton law firm KBL Solicitors report that recently published statistics have revealed the number claims issued in the Employment Tribunal between 1 April 2011 to 31 March 2012 has fallen by 15% when compared to the previous year.

Despite this reduction, a total of 186,300 claims were issued over the twelve month period. 31% of these claims related to unfair dismissal, breach of contract and redundancy, 29% concerned the Working Time Regulations, and 16% were for unauthorised deductions from wages.

The Government appears determined to reduce the number of Employment Tribunal with a range of measures, including increasing the qualifying period for raising an unfair dismissal claim from one to two years, the proposed introduction of Tribunal fees payable by Claimants, mandatory conciliation, and simplified settlement discussions. Whether a reduction will be seen, and if so, how big, remains to be seen.
